Dear Young People,
Confirmation: What exactly are we confirming?
The word confirmation literally means “with firm-ness”. As young people reach the age of accountability, “confirmation” is a call to discipleship. This call allows
young people, sixth grade or older, the chance to claim the name, Christian. You are ready to take more responsibility for your faith and to turn toward God’s grace and profess your faith through Baptism and/or a commitment to the church.
We, at GUMC, would like to empower and enable young people to respond to God’s call in faith through confirmation this Spring. This eight week program will be offered during the Team Christ hours, 4:15- 5:15 each Wednesday beginning on March 11th and will continue until Confirmation Sunday, May 17th.
There are two focal points throughout the program: Information and Formation. You will receive the basics of the faith including an overview of the Christian faith, Scripture, history and heritage, practices, beliefs, and commitments. Along with facts and information, you will explore the faith and experience it in a safe, loving environment. You will develop relationships, practice spiritual disciplines, and become a Christian community within your own class.
Your family does not have to be members of GUMC for you to participate in the program. Following these eight weeks, you will reach a point of decision. You may decide to be confirmed on Confirmation Sunday. This decision means that you will become a professing member of the church. If you have been baptized, the church supports your baptism that day. If you have not been baptized, you will be given the opportunity to be baptized as a part on the confirmation service. You do not have to be confirmed. You may choose to wait until later or you may choose not to be confirmed at all. The decision will be yours.
We ask that you take this spiritual journey into consideration. Please let one of our pastors or Ms. Dana know if you are interested. We will welcome you with Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors.
Peace and Smiles,
Ms. Dana
